Officer Butler (son of the police union Vice President) and his partner pursued a suspect after exiting their patrol vehicle. While his partner, Officer Martinez, followed the suspect, he alerted Butler, stating, “that’s not a gun, bro,” indicating the suspect was unarmed. Shortly after, LAPD Sergeant Hayhoe, who was driving alongside the suspect, fired two shots out of the vehicle’s passenger window, hitting the suspect while steering with his left hand.
Despite being informed that the suspect was unarmed, Butler fired his weapon as the subject fell to the ground. Neither Butler nor any other officers at the scene requested an ambulance for nearly three minutes following the shooting.
Shortly after, Butler was promoted to ‘field training officer’ and transferred to the Community Safety Partnership Bureau.
