Ayron McKay, identified as a Black LAPD officer, is one of several officers accused in a whistleblower complaint detailing rampant racism, sexism, and homophobia within the LAPD’s Recruiting Division. According to the complaint, McKay:
- Engaged in racially offensive banter, including calling Black people “monkeys” and reacting to news stories involving Black individuals with comments like “what’s new” and “those people are horrible.”
- Participated in discriminatory evaluations of applicants, including mocking an applicant by calling them “Cheese Dick.”
- Collaborated with Officer Shirley Burgos in making inappropriate jokes, including racist remarks about Black people’s preferences for grape soda and Kool-Aid.
- Suggested deporting an applicant, in a conversation with Burgos.
- Advised a supervisor not to hire an applicant, allegedly based on race.
