Officer Omar Veloz was accused in the Rampart CRASH unit scandal of excessive force and writing false reports.
Veloz was one of the witnesses in a trial concerning a 1996 gang bust where four officers are accused of perjury related to framing suspects. During his testimony, Veloz expressed significant memory loss about the event, stating, “I don’t even remember doing it.”
His inability to recall specific events mirrored the lack of memory demonstrated by other officers who testified. The deputy district attorney became exasperated with Veloz’s memory failure, prompting her to ask if there was anything at all he could remember. This pattern of forgetfulness among the Rampart CRASH unit officers was been a recurring theme throughout the trial.
